WHY I CHOSE EDUCATION.
Choosing education was an easy decision for me. I have developed a passion for people, especially students. My graphic design instructor in high school played such a huge role in my growth as a person, student, and artist. She instilled in me confidence, a passion to work hard, and to respect others. This is what I will instill in my students, confidence and respect in every area of their life, so they may reach success, and see the sincere purpose they each have. After developing a passion for art in my high school career I began my own art education journey.
My teaching philosophy focuses on the growth of my students as artists and individuals; that they may become confident with themselves, as well as life long learners. I believe that every child has the ability to learn, and I look forward to meeting the various needs of each of my students. I wish to present them an enthusiastic approach to their projects as well as in every situation they are faced with. Enthusiasm is contagious. Motivating and inspiring my students is vital to my approach.
My classroom will represent an atmosphere of creativity, openness, respect, challenges, relevance, and growth. In the classroom I will strive to create an open and safe environment for my students, by gaining mutual respect, as well as to be creative and allowing them to make personal connections with their artwork. I will demonstrate that art is all around us, practical, creative, and expressive. I will create a safe classroom by setting rules, praising students when they are doing well, and correcting students when they need redirection. I want my students to feel safe to express themselves through artwork as well as being open and respectful with their peers. It is my passion to have an interdisciplinary curriculum, so students can make connections between subjects, real-world connections, as well as opening their eyes to the importance of art in all areas.
My teaching style will adapt to the specific needs of my students while using a range of interactive lecture, demonstration, hands-on experience, and problem solving. Interactive lecture will allow students to play an active role in discussion, as well as making them look deeper into the subject at hand. Art has to have hands on experience, this is how students will discover new things and learn and master their growing skills. I want my students to leave each class period with new knowledge. I want to introduce new mediums to my students, but allowing them ample time to master a specific medium.
Overall, my passion lies first with my students. I desire my students to not only grow and develop as artists, but as a whole person. I want the students to play an active role in the classroom through discussion and hands on experience. I desire for them to learn to respect one another through the sharing of ideas and their personal artwork. I will show my students that art is all around us. I want to have an interdisciplinary curriculum; exposing students to a variety of mediums and their possibilities. I want them to desire to share the importance of art with their peers and to inspire those around them, as I’m sure they will inspire me.
